What to do when your kitten swallows string

Kittens are more likely than older cats to swallow string, rubber bands, needles and thread, and so on. If you see string protruding from your pet’s rectum, try one very gentle pull. If the string does not come out easily, take your cat to the veterinarian.

Swallowed string and thread may also loop under an animal’s tongue. If you see any such object in your pet’s mouth, do not attempt to pull it out. You could cause the string to cut through the cat’s intestines, which could be fatal. Instead, take your pet to the vet. The best preventative is to safely store needles and thread. And make sure the string around your Sunday roast beef is trashed where an inquisitive cat can’t find it. (Beef-flavored string is an all-time feline favorite.)
